Equine-Assisted Therapy

A Clinical Approach Rooted in Experience

Equine-assisted therapy is a form of psychotherapy that integrates guided, ground-based interaction with horses into the therapeutic process. At Horse & Soul, this approach is offered as a clinical modality and is thoughtfully incorporated into treatment when appropriate.

It is not recreational and not a separate add-on service — it is therapy.

What Is Equine-Assisted Therapy?

Equine-assisted therapy combines traditional therapeutic techniques with experiential learning through interaction with horses. Horses are highly perceptive animals that respond authentically to human emotion, energy, and communication. Their presence can help clients:

  • Increase emotional awareness
  • Improve regulation skills
  • Explore communication patterns
  • Build confidence
  • Develop insight in real time

All sessions are facilitated by Deanna Rupp, LSCSW, a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Kansas.

How It Works

 Equine-assisted therapy sessions are:

  • Ground-based (no riding involved)
  • Do not require any experience with horses
  • Structured within a clinical treatment plan
  • Guided by therapeutic goals
  • Integrated with reflection and processing

Not every client participates in equine-assisted therapy. Together, you and Deanna will determine whether this modality aligns with your treatment needs and goals.
